Rosin is a transparent glassy brittle substance with a special odor, insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene, carbon disulfide, turpentine, oil and alkali solution. The main components of rosin acid and rosin anhydride are unsaturated compounds, active. The quality of rosin depends on color, acidity, softening point, transparency, etc. Generally, the lighter the color, the better the quality. Its metal soap (such as cobalt abietic acid) is commonly used as desiccant, calcium soap is commonly used in printing ink, and other soaps can also be used as surfactants. There are three kinds of rosin resins, namely, glycerin rosin resin, pentaerythritol rosin resin and pentaerythritol polymerized rosin resin. Glycerol rosin resin is soluble in aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents and drying oils, and has good wettability to pigments, but due to poor solvent release, it is not suitable for liquid inks. Pentaerythritol rosin resin conjunctiva is hard, high gloss, fast drying speed, in solvent release, water, alkali, gasoline and other aspects than glycerin rosin resin.
Pentaerythritol polymerization rosin can be directly used for cheap gravure ink, do cover light oil, and its lipid more widely used, there is a trend to replace the glycerin rosin resin and pentaerythritol rosin resin.
